Tony’s Spunky Steer and “The Wright Gourmet,” for anyone familiar with Ed Wright’s reviews have had a colorful history. This said, of all of the restaurants in the Inland Empire we were unaware of any that had received a more mixed batch of reviews and laughably negative postings.
It does appear that the "Storm Clouds" of Negative reviews from customers bullied into paying artificially inflated bills with threats of calling the police has cleared up, with "Blue Sky" in view for the Spunky Steer. This was the type of problem "The Wright Gourmet" had personally encountered in the past and also read about in other reviews posted online (and I find inexcusable). From everything we can tell the issues, and my personal encounter centered more around past management's interpretation of customer service more than that of the actual food quality or restaurant staffing itself... and now seems to be semi-old history.

You are way to easy on this dumper of a restaurant; change of management or not, the food still SUCKS!

What a surprise to read a review from a restaurant critic that is not afraid to write the negative as well as the good.
We suffered a similar embarrassment at the hands of the Spunky Steer management, and they called the police on us also. How humiliating! You could not drag us back into that loser of a restaurant. They jacked our bill up with items we did not even order and than insisted we pay for them. Granted, this was 2 years ago, but we still remember it like yesterday.
Tony's Spunky Steer is a certified rip off. Do not back off of them until they close.

Restaurant Reviews may never survive food critics as honest as this, it almost looks like one negative review generates or encourages the next. This does not excuse the newspaper reviewers who simple say every restaurant is wonderful, but begs the question can Tony’s Spunky Steer be as bad as these reviews make it sound?
We have eaten at Tony’s Spunky Steer on several occasions, and although we would not recommend their food or praise the service I am not sure it is fair to allow just anyone post whatever they want. It does make interesting reading, and good for a few laughs.
It is hard to imagine any restaurant calling the police over a few dollars billing misunderstanding, it sounds more like the manager caught them trying to skip out on paying their bill. If it happened to me I would certainly want to do more than just write a bad review, but how many years ago did these events happen? Do you suppose it is fair to continue the negative or at some point allow the Spunky Steer to put the misdeeds of past bad management behind them?
It sounds like this is what Ed Wright is trying to do in his Wright Gourmet review; perhaps everyone else should do the same also.

Greetings Mr. Wright Gourmet; we have lived in Redlands for years and have to admit that we have eaten at Tony’s Spunky Steer, and find that your review is totally fair. If you look for other food critics reviews for the Spunky Steer you will only find one from Redlands Web who was obviously trying to sell advertising on their website rather than provide a usable review of the food.
If you search the old "Lets Dine Out" site you will not find Allen Borgan dining out at any Tony’s Spunky Steer. Could it be he knows the food sucks at the Spunky Steer, or that Tony just does not have enough money to pay him to say something nice?
The Inland Empire needs more food critics like you Mr. Wright, who seem to not be for hire to write misleading dribble to generate ad revenues or sell coupons for their papers and magazines. Keep up the good work, your reviews are "Right On" and you are the only food critic that rates Yucaipa & Redlands dining spots honestly and fairly.

WOW! This site tells it like its is. Tony’s Spunky Steer sells cheap, and cheap is what you get; not much more, and obviously from the prices all anyone can expect is less, which is what the Spunky Steer specializes in.
The restaurant is old and desperately needs remodeled, as does the menu which is the same old "Cheap Steak House" boring fare. Tony’s Spunky Steer makes an OK hamburger, but for the price there are a lot of drive-thrus and fast food burger joints that have them beat, are cleaner, more comfortable, provide better, faster service without the side of Tony's negative attitude, and charge less.
We tried complaining to the waitress about how undercooked the steaks were, so without saying anything she took them back and when returned they were over cooked. When we told her that our hamburger was over cooked, we were told that is what was the way hamburger was required to be cooked.
As a recap: Our steaks were undercooked and our hamburger over cooked with the service taking forever. Should we say, "We got what we paid for?" We won't be back.

They should rename this place the "dangerously hot metal plate" restaurant. That's all that they do well: heat up metal plates. This is a steak restaurant that has no idea how to cook meat. You will do far better buying the cheapest meat at the grocery store and cooking it yourself. Their servers should tip their customers for having to cook their own meat. This restaurant is the definition of all sizzle but no steak. Even Korean BBQ places, where customers cook their own meat, at least season and marinate it. You won't see a more pathetic slab of steak served anywhere. Unfortunately, there are enough people who flock their for their low prices to stay in business. There is truly no accounting for bad taste.
